Gemma Sandell

Gemma Sandell is a documentary photographer whose work focuses on human relationships. Gemma started her photographic career working in the NGO sector in South-East Asia creating work surrounding topics of education, healthcare, and maternity. Whilst working on assignment she felt most captivated by the relationships between the people in the stories and went on to focus her practice on documentary projects highlighting human relationships.

Since relocating to the UK Gemma has worked on several short form documentary photography projects about topics including; the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on local communities, the rise in the use of parks & green spaces, and women's safety in London. Most recently Gemma has been working on an on-going documentary project in response to her experience of encountering her family archive for the first time as an adult having suffered severe memory loss as a child. This project, titled “Memories Evicted from the Mind Stick to the Skin”, reflects on themes of memory, family and loss and questions the authenticity of the traditional family album.

Gemma is available for commissions and collaborations both in the UK and further afield. Please use the contact page in enquire.
